Nadia Crighton takes at look at the top 10 most popular cat breeds from around the globe.
10. Sphynx
In 1966 a cat gave birth to a hairless kitten, due to a genetic mutation. From this one rare kitten in Canada the Sphynx breed was born. These unusual, yet stunning hairless cats and have grown in popularity over the years particularly with those who are allergic to pet hair. However contrary to popular belief they are not completely hairless with some resembling skin and fine hair like a peach. They are an intelligent and inquisitive breed. They are considered a rare breed, but are very much in demand making them #10 on our most popular list.
9. Birman
This beautiful cat is known for its enchanting eyes and loving nature. They have a stunning and story single coat with no undercoat, which means that their coats do not matt or require lots of grooming. They are a patient and tolerant breed and are ideal for families with children.
8. Burmese
A very popular breed that is loved for their gentle nature and stunning looks. The breed is super-friendly and is a close ancestor of the popular breed; Siamese. An energetic and loveable breed that enjoys the company of others and simply cannot resist being a part of the action, and conversation. Very intelligent with a soft meow and stunning velvet-like fur. The Burmese does not like to be left long alone for long periods of time, and enjoys a busy household with plenty of attention and love.
7. Oriental
Also a close cousin of the Siamese breed, the Oriental knows exactly what it wants and will demand full attention with this adorable raspy voice. They share very similar traits to the Siamese, being they are conversation makers and starters. A simply adorable and highly intelligent breed, which is known for their impressive agility and unlimited source of energy. They are the lovers of the cat world and are extremely loyal to those they choose to love.
6. British Shorthair
This is the pedigree version of the traditional British domestic cat. They are simply stunning and warrant a cuddle and pat from anyone who is in arms reach. They are a big cat with a broad appearance and coat like velvet. The British Shorthair are not normally fond of being carried so it’s wise to advise children not to carry them. They are like big loveable teddy bears and even look with a constant smile. A loving breed, not known for their agility, but certainly admired for their cuddly and loving nature.
5. Abyssinian
This stunning breed is a popular addition to many homes. They are curious playful cats who love the company of others. They are certainly a highly intelligent people cat, who want to know what you are doing, all of the time. A constant and loving companion. They are known to have their humans jumping through hoops and their every adorable whim. Thriving on human companionship the breed does not like to be alone for long periods of time.
4. Ragdoll
The striking blue eye of the Ragdoll are hypnotically beautiful. The breed is friendly, loving and stunning. They have sweet and loving personalities and are gentle and affectionate. The breed does require grooming otherwise matting in the coat will become a problem. Some owners choose to clip their Ragdolls in various styles during the heat of summer to help with cooling. They are vey docile and laid back, with many resembling a ‘ragdoll’ when being carried.
3. Maine Coon
The biggest of the cat breeds this stunning cat is well-loved and adored across the globe. They are famous for being one of the largest cat breeds. Maine Coons are the hunters of the cat breeds and are great at catching rats and mice. Being one of the oldest breeds in Northern America the cats have a long and interesting history. Maine Coons love people, but are also very independent meaning they are not overly needy of attention. A very playful and loving cat, that is easy going and relaxed.
2. Siamese
A loveable and very talkative breed who thrives on unlimited attention from those it chooses to love. The Siamese is lean and long with impressive agility and energy. They can be very aloof to those who they do not love…and incredibly affectionate to those they do adore. Not a cat to be messed with, they are strong in character and nature and have put many dogs to shame with their unwillingness to back down. Siamese love to spend their days following their owners, offering advice and cuddling. A very loyal and loving breed of cat.
1. Persian
The Persian cat breed is the most popular breed internationally. They are adored by millions around the globe, with some slight variation on the name from country to country. They are an elegant cat that is regal and dignified. Known for their laid-back and docile nature, the breed is very popular for their love and devotion to their humans. The breed does require grooming and much attention in this area will be praised with endless puuurrrrs from your beloved Persian. Not well known for their agility, but don’t be fooled…this breed will have it’s humans jumping through hoops from the comfort of the lounge.
