Future Vet Kids Camp – Inspiring the Future

Pet Insurance Australia caught up with one of the recent PetSure Scholarship winners of the Future Vet Kids Camp, Caitlyn May, to get an insight into this wonderful program for aspiring young vets.
The veterinary-inspired holiday program in Sydney has just wrapped up another year of enlightening children from around Australia who are crazy about animals. The program offers many extraordinary hands-on experiences including; blood draw, suture workshops, vet hospital excursions and veterinary talks.
“This is a sensational experience for any child who is passionate about the veterinary world and animal care,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says. “This is certainly a wonderful way to create an impressive motivator in aspiring young vets.”
The camp-goers also get to learn about dog training and behavior, solve real-life veterinary cases and handle animals of all shapes and sizes.
“The PetSure Scholarship allows two candidates to experience this wonderful camp free of charge,” Crighton says. “This year Caitlyn May of Queensland and, Rosie Poulson of New South Wales were the lucky the recipients.”
Caitlyn’s mum, Julia May, was delighted that her daughter was chosen for the scholarship.
“Caitlyn has wanted to be a vet for at least 10 years and has done all the possible animal care courses available through Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary – even being the youngest person to ever complete one of the advanced reptile care programs,” Julia says.
Caitlyn also volunteers at the Animal Welfare League Queensland on a regular basis, a role she began during her Duke of Edinburgh Program.
Caitlyn was thrilled with the whole experience of the camp and the hands-on involvement.
“I loved everything about the camp,” she said. “I really enjoyed the behinds the scenes tours such as at the My Vet hospital, where we got to look at their facilities and watch a tooth extraction plus the Teaching Facilities at Sydney University.”
“Getting to learn how to suture, give injection, take a urine sample straight from the bladder and examine it, administer tablets, draw blood and dress and wrap a wound, do an ultrasound, give a physical exam and learn about giving internal examinations with a camera were all awesome and handy experiences as well which will be very useful in my future studies.”
The Future Vet Kids Camp has certainly affirmed Caitlyn’s desire to work with animals.
“At camp I found that there is many different pathways and jobs that are available in the field such as animal behaviour and optometry.”
