It’s not uncommon for pet lovers to want to include their beloved pets in all of the fun and festivities of the year.
“Easter is no different,” says Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton. “It’s a great time of year to celebrate being an avid pet lover and showing your appreciation for the love of your pet.”
As many Australian dogs and cats prepare to adorn bunny ears and fluffy tails, or maybe even a chick-suit or two the warnings remain the same.
“It’s good to remember to keep the chocolate out of reach and perhaps prepare a ‘pet friendly’ treat jar so guests can treat your pet safely,” Crighton says. “Also do a quick check of the yard after the Easter bunny has been to check there are no left over eggs lurking in special places.”
Some of the many ways Australia’s are expected to treat their pets include; specially designed Easter toys, special treats, pet friendly events and being included in all of the fun.
“Even prepare your dogs own ‘Easter hunt’ using home-made treats,” Crighton recommends. “Also consider asking the Easter bunny to enclose the chocolate eggs inside the brightly coloured plastic egg holders that are readily available to prevent accidental ingestion.”
Easter baskets are also a good way to keep the eggs in one place and out of reach.
If you suspect your dog has ingested some Easter eggs it’s important to act quickly and keep your dog calm. Calling your local emergency veterinarian immediately and keeping a close eye on your pet is vital.
“Also check out a an online chocolate calculator (www.askavetquestion.com/chocolate_toxicity.php) these tools can help you determine the seriousness of the ingestion,” Crighton says.
Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include;
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Increased heart rate
• Pacing / restlessness
• Rapid breathing
• Seizures
“This is a time of year to celebrate family and friends, the beloved dog or cat is certainly a huge part of the festivities,” Crighton says. “Keeping it fun and safe will ensure everyone has a great time.”
