Halloween Safety

Pet Insurance Australia is urging all Australians to consider their pet’s safety during Halloween celebrations.

“It’s such a great time of year when people let their hair down and enjoy this spooky celebration,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says. “However it’s also a good idea to consider some safety issues with our pets.”

PIA is suggesting that dog and cat owners consider keeping their companion animals in a secure location during the haunting celebrations.

“If you are having a party consider keeping your pet away from the noise and commotion, and putting them into a safe and secure place.”

Chocolate, alcohol and some human food can be very toxic to pets. A small amount of alcohol can cause poising and can be detrimental to the health of an animal. Other items such as popped balloons and ribbon can also cause problems if ingested by a curious cat or canine.

“During celebrations much of these items are left unattended in the environment, which can spell disaster for pets,” she says. “So if you are not able to supervise your pet it is best to keep them away from celebrations in a quiet safe place.”

PIA is also reminding Australians the importance of always monitoring your pets if they are wearing costumes.

“Pet costumes are very funny and it’s great to get your pets into the spirit of the event,” Crighton says. “However, always remove the costume when your pet is not being 100% supervised, to prevent injury.”

Safety Checklist

  • A secure/safe place to go – bathroom/laundry.
  • Label the door with a sign.
  • Keep a ‘dog/cat treat jar’ and encourage your guests to treat from this jar and not their plates.
  • Take costumes off when your pet is not being supervised.
  • Keep chocolate and alcohol out of reach of paws.
  • Collar; with up-to-date information.
  • Signs to remind guests to close doors/gates etc.
